Family-Owned Business Finds Major Successes
StoneMill Log & Timber Homes, founded in 1974 by John R. Sterchi, Jr., is celebrating its 40th year in business. With more than 100 years of combined experience in the log and timber industry amongst its employees, this family-owned and operated business is a national leader in its trade.
Inspired by a cabin getaway vacation, Sterchi, Jr. found the desire to start a log and timber home building business and felt it would especially prosper in his native East Tennessee. After seven years of struggling to build the business during historically record high interest rates, the company received a phone call from former President Jimmy Carter requesting that StoneMill build him a cabin in Northern Georgia. StoneMill accepted the challenge and this beloved cabin of President Carter’s greatly heightened the company’s national exposure. In the words of Mathew Sterchi, “that phone call and cabin put StoneMill on the map.”
After 40 years in business, StoneMill is still family-owned and operated, prosperous, and now under its second generation of management with John’s son, the before mentioned Mathew, serving as StoneMill’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing, and Robert W. Cantrell, Jr., John’s son-in-law, serving as President.
“One of the best business lessons I’ve learned from my father is that if you are passionate about what you do, you’ll be successful,” said Mathew.
StoneMill’s passion combined with their continued recognition for industry best practices has led to the company’s continued sustainability as a small business champion.
Having built approximately 2,000 homes in almost every state in the nation and Puerto Rico, it is obvious that StoneMill has had major nationwide success. Additionally, the company is one of the oldest members of the National Association of Home Builders’ Log and Timber Homes Council.
“StoneMill Log & Timber Homes are inspired by the historic structures of our country’s rich past, but they are built on a promise to stand strong for years to come,” said Mathew.
